WWW Wednesday 25th August 2021

Hello there everybody! I am under pressure but if I don’t think about it, it will go away. As to avoid thinking about it, I am here, writing this.

WWW Wednesday is a meme hosted by Taking On A World Of Books (previously hosted by A Daily Rhythm). If you decide to join in just answer these three questions: What are you reading now? What did you read recently? What will you read next? And then comment and leave a link to your post there. Then you can go and check out what everyone else is reading!

In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan

“What’s your name?”

“Serene.”

“Serena?” Elliot asked.

“Serene,” said Serene. “My full name is Serene-Heart-in-the-Chaos-of-Battle.”

Elliot’s mouth fell open. “That is badass.”

The Borderlands aren’t like anywhere else. Don’t try to smuggle a phone or any other piece of technology over the wall that marks the Border—unless you enjoy a fireworks display in your backpack. (Ballpoint pens are okay.) There are elves, harpies, and—best of all as far as Elliot is concerned—mermaids.

Elliot? Who’s Elliot? Elliot is thirteen years old. He’s smart and just a tiny bit obnoxious. Sometimes more than a tiny bit. When his class goes on a field trip and he can see a wall that no one else can see, he is given the chance to go to school in the Borderlands.

It turns out that on the other side of the wall, classes involve a lot more weaponry and fitness training and fewer mermaids than he expected. On the other hand, there’s Serene-Heart-in-the-Chaos-of-Battle, an elven warrior who is more beautiful than anyone Elliot has ever seen, and then there’s her human friend Luke: sunny, blond, and annoyingly likeable. There are lots of interesting books. There’s even the chance Elliot might be able to change the world.

Listen. Every once in a while, I have a reading slump and forget how much I sincerely enjoy books. Sometimes it lasts for a few days, sometimes weeks. And every time, the first book after the slump happens is like pouring water into hot sand — consumed at an obsessive speed and absolutely not enough.

Basically, what I’m saying is that I am really enjoying this book but it’s going down too fast.

In A Holidaze by Christina Lauren

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…but not for Maelyn Jones. She’s living with her parents, hates her going-nowhere job, and has just made a romantic error of epic proportions.

But perhaps worst of all, this is the last Christmas Mae will be at her favorite place in the world—the snowy Utah cabin where she and her family have spent every holiday since she was born, along with two other beloved families. Mentally melting down as she drives away from the cabin for the final time, Mae throws out what she thinks is a simple plea to the universe: Please. Show me what will make me happy.

The next thing she knows, tires screech and metal collides, everything goes black. But when Mae gasps awake…she’s on an airplane bound for Utah, where she begins the same holiday all over again. With one hilarious disaster after another sending her back to the plane, Mae must figure out how to break free of the strange time loop—and finally get her true love under the mistletoe.

Rating: 1.5 out of 5.

This book was not good. For me, of course. The characters were either annoying or insanely bland, the plot was flat. The time loop was not explored at all and, as usual, the conflict was inane and unnecessary. This book might be what put me in the slump. Not for me.

Reading Next:

No idea, actually. I have The Deep by Rivers Solomon on my sooner-rather-than-later-to-be-read list.

That is it for today guys! Sorry about the curtness of today’s WWW Wednesday but I might talk about In A Holidaze in another post and, of course, I’ll be talking about In Other Lands in next week’s post.

Have a great day and see you all soon!

Take care.
